Kelly's Directory of Sussex, 1905.
Haywards Heath consists of 5 electoral wards with a population of around 25,250. The nearby village wards of Cuckfield (5,000 inhabitants) and Lindfield (6,600 inhabitants) brings the total to nearly 37,500. Haywards Heath considers itself "The Heart of Mid Sussex", sitting between the other two major towns in the district: East Grinstead to the North East and Burgess Hill to the South. The A272 runs through the main high street (South Road) with the long promised bypass still on hold. The planned re-development of the town was re-started with another consultation period on proposals for re-developing the area around the station.
