Surrey

The county of Surrey in the South East region of England is Saxon for "Southern Region" and appears to have been a disputed frontier between the kingdoms of Kent, Essex, Sussex, Wessex and Mercia, until being formed as a shire in the Kingdom of Wessex in 825 AD. It's boundaries have continued to be significantly re-defined due to the massive expansion of London at its expense - notably taking away Croydon, Sutton, Merton and Kingston upon Thames, but being compensated with acquisitions from the now dissolved county of Middlesex.

Guildford is the historic county town of Surrey, although Surrey County Council sits at Kingston upon Thames which became part of Greater London on 1965. Other major towns are Woking, Ewell, Camberley, Ashford (Middlesex), Epsom, Farnham, Staines and Redhill.

The M25, M3 and M23 all pass through parts of Surrey. Other major roads are the A23, A24, A31 and A331 also pass through.

Major railway stations in Surrey include Guildford, Woking, Epsom and Redhill.
